Here are the updates from this week.
Bookfair on Monday!
Next Monday, our students will attend the bookfair. If you would like them to purchase books, please send in money. Students may also put books on hold for a day if they forget to bring in money.
We Need...
Tissues and snack!
Homework
After this week we will be ending our homework packets. Students should still read 20-30 minutes every night.
End of the Year
Save the date! June 16 will be our end of the year celebration. The event will start at 8:15 and will end around 9:15. Judy and Zazy will be in touch with what we need and I will update you on more details as they come.
Field Trip
Next week is our field trip to the Charles Hayden Planetarium. On Wednesday, June 8th from 11:15 - 1:30. We will take public transportation to get there. Permission slips went home last Friday. I still need permission slips from some students.
Our Learning
We are well on our way into learning about the earth, sun, and moon in our Science unit. This week we learned what makes the day and night and why the moon has phases. Students have been creating human models of this by working in small groups. We have also been learning to create dance moves that represent these concepts. The students will put their dance moves together to present at the celebration on June 17th.In Reading and Writing we have been studying folk tales. The students learned what a folk tale is and we are starting to study the different types of folk tales. Next week we will start our new book clubs. In addition to reading folk tales, we have learned about the art of storytelling and how it is different from reading a story. Students have learned about how this tradition has been passed down through generations. We watched videos of storytellers and thought about how a person learns to tell stories. Each student has chosen a story and they will learn how to memorize it and make it their own in the next few weeks. These stories will also be shared at our celebration!
In Math we continued our unit on adding and subtracting multiples of 100. We have identified 5 different strategies we can use for these. Some strategies we came up with include: drawing a picture, using a number line, splitting the numbers into 100s, 10s, and 1s, using the traditional algorithm, and Aviva shared a grouping strategy she invented. As we gain more confidence in using these strategies, we will apply them to larger numbers. We will end our year with a brief unit on 3-D objects.
