Hello Friends and Families!
This was another busy week in Room 108. Here are some updates.
Thank Yous!
This week we traveled to MIT. Thanks to Sheila and Jeffrey (Dasani's parents), Ileana (Kesing's mom), Amy (Samuel's mom), Asmait (Micky's mom), and April (Ria's mom) for joining us on our trip! Thank you to Amy for sending out pictures. If you did not receive these please let me know. Thanks also to Chris (Isaac's dad) for bringing in 6 boxes of Goldfish!
Things We Need
Tissues
Constructing Cambridge Help
We are in the process of writing our field guide to Cambridge. We will need photographs for the book. If you are interested in taking photographs to put in the book please contact me.
Toys in School
Recently we have had a lot of legos and toys making their way into the classroom. These have been distracting to students during our learning time. Please help me enforce our no toys policy by reminding your kids to keep these at home.
Our Learning
This week we continued to familiarize ourselves with the MCAS in Reading Workshop. We learned strategies for answering Open Response questions. Today, students worked with a partner to complete the multiple choice questions on a practice MCAS. They used the strategies we have been learning to answer the questions. Next week we will continue our preparation for the first test on Wednesday. On Thursday we will return to our study on biographies.
In Writing Workshop, we started the first drafts of our field guide entries. Students used the strategy of "Fast Write" to help them get their ideas on paper. Next week they will meet with their partners from Rebecca's room to revise and start the second draft. In Social Studies we will continue researching for our field guide entries.
In Math we transitioned from learning about arrays to division. Students learned that dividing means breaking something into equal groups. We read story problems and decided if the story problems asked us to divide or multiply. This is a challenging concept for students to understand so we will continue this next week. Students were also briefly introduced to writing division equations. Next week we will finish our intro to multiplication and division. This does not mean that multiplication and division are completely abandoned! Please continue practicing multiplication every night with your child for at least 5 minutes. This will help when we return to multiplication and division concepts later in the year.
Next week we will have our very first MCAS. Please make sure your students get plenty of rest Tuesday night and they eat a healthy breakfast Wednesday morning! Thanks again for all your support!
Sincerely,
Meg
