Friday, March 11

Hello Friends and Families!

This was another busy week in Room 108.  Here are some updates.

Welcome Back!
Ria returned to Room 108 and we were so glad to have her back!  Welcome back, Ria!

Things We Need
Snack, snack, snack!

Homework
I made a mistake in the homework this week and accidentally included a math sheet from last week.  You may have noticed there was an extra sheet.  My apologies!  I sent home multiplication cards today with the students of 108.  They know how to use these but I also included a math letter to you as well as instructions.  These can be completed in place of one homework sheet this week or next week.  I encourage all students to review multiplication facts at least 5 minutes every night.

Field Work

Next Wednesday we will be heading out for our last trip as part of our Constructing Cambridge unit.  Today, students received a permission slip for our trip to MIT.  Please sign and return no later than Tuesday!  We will also need chaperones for this trip.

Our Learning

This week we started to familiarize ourselves with the MCAS in Reading Workshop. Students started by sharing what they know, what they wondered, and what they were concerned about.  We had an interesting discussion about what the MCAS is and we were able to answer a lot of questions, including, "Is it pronounced MCAS or MCAST?"  The students then looked at a passage from a previous test and noticed the format and what was different from books and other texts we usually read.  We spent one day looking at the rubric for an open response question. Students even got a chance to score a student response!  Each group had to tell everyone what score they gave the student and why they gave the student this score.  It was a great discussion that helped a lot of children feel more comfortable with the test.  We will continue looking at the MCAS next week in preparation for our own test on March 23.

In Writing Workshop, we finished our work in class on our special place essays.  Many students are still working on these however we need to move on to the rest of our field guide to meet our publishing deadline!  Students will have an opportunity to work on their special place essays during morning work this week, however, some will need to work on these at home. Next week we will jump right in to the writing of the field guide.

Next week, for Social Studies we will get ready for our trip to MIT.  Students will learn a little about the area, including a presentation by Ann, our librarian, about Smoots!  (Not sure what Smoots are?  Ask your child Monday evening!)  On Wednesday, we will get to visit a lab on campus and walk around looking at some of the amazing architecture.

In Math we continued our study of arrays and we transitioned into really learning our multiplication facts with speed and accuracy.  Students looked at arrays in real life (such as a marching band formation, a bookshelf, and the layout of a garden.)  They learned to find products (the number of squares in an array) by skip counting and looking for smaller arrays within the bigger array.  Next week we will transition to division and look at the relationship between multiplication and division.

Don't forget, this Sunday we "spring" our clocks forward for Daylight Savings Time and next week we do not have school on Thursday.  See you all soon!

Sincerely,
Meg
