Hello Friends and Families!
I hear Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring on Groundhog's Day this week, let's hope he is right! Next week is a busy week with our first expedition for our Constructing Cambridge unit. Here are some other important highlights from Room 108.
If you would like to join us next Thursday on our trip to the Cambridge Common on Thursday, please let me, Zazy, or Judy know. We will be searching through the Common, looking for important artifacts in the history of Cambridge. Please make sure your child has boots, gloves/mittens, a hat, and if possible, snow pants! We will leave school at 9 am and will return around 10:30 or 11:00.
This week we started to explore the concept of genre in Reading Workshop. This is in preparation for our in-depth look at biographies. Each student in 3rd grade will learn about one person who is important to Massachusetts history. Next week we will start focusing on the aspects of a biography. In Writing Workshop, we have spent time learning how to highlight as we read nonfiction and how to take notes. Next week we will start writing parts to our field guide. Today, students from both 3rd grade classes met and brainstormed important places, people, events, streets, and more for the field guide. Make sure to ask your child what letter he or she will write about and feel free to help them come up with new ideas!
In Math we have wrapped up our unit on Perimeter, Angles, and Area. Next week we will start our unit on multiplication and division. I will send home a note about the unit on Tuesday with the homework. Students will start by looking at equal groups and how we relate multiplication and division. By the end of Grade 3, it is expected that students know and use multiplication combinations with products to 50.
Just as a sneak preview here are the remaining Math units for the year: Unit 5 (our current unit) Equal Groups: multiplication and division, Unit 6 Stories, Tables, and Graphs: patterns, functions, and change, Unit 7 Finding Fair Shares: fractions and decimals, Unit 8 How Many Hundreds? How Many Miles?: addition, subtraction, and the number system, Unit 9 Solids and Boxes: 3-D geometry and measurment)
Next week we will also welcome some more guest speakers into our room. On Monday, we will have someone speaking to us about dental education. Next Friday, we will have a woman who is blind, along with her guide dog, join both 3rd Grade rooms for our unit on blindness in Respecting Differences.
As you can see, there are many exciting things happening in Room 108. I hope you are all staying warm and safe in this oh-so-wintery weather.
Sincerely,
Meg
